As a small-footed guy, we sometimes find ourselves in situations where others might notice our small feet. What do you do to hide, to avoid comments about your size?
#1: Keep your feet inside your shoes and wear shoes that are bigger than your feet (but not so big you are tripping on stuff). Avoid situations where anyone might feel where your toes are...
If your feet have to come out: * Wear thicker socks or multiple socks * Wear socks loose so your foot size is not as obvious * Hide your feet under the chair * Sit on your feet * Bend your toes so your overall foot length is less obvious * Wearing darker socks might make your feet less noticeable but they also tend to make your feet look smaller. * Wearing lighter sock usually makes your feet look bigger but also more noticeable.
If you have to remove your socks: * Wear flip flops / sandals that are not too big or too small for you. Flip flops that are too big really accentuate your small feet. Just a little extra room is good. But sandals that cover your feet can be worn bigger and may hide your small feet. * Avoid standing too close to others while barefoot to avoid people noticing how much smaller your feet are than theirs. * If you are at the beach, bury your feet in the sand :-)
Never really had an issue with people trying to wear my flip flops or even thought about imprints on the beach. But I can usually get away with my flip flops being a size 10 and not looking too oversized.
Hey, I'm a men's 7 guy, never have worried about hiding my feet. In fact I usually wear even smaller shoes, typically a Y6 or Y5 or women's 7 or 8. I've even worn men's 3 sneakers to work in years gone by. I've gotten occasional comments about small feet, typically when wearing even smaller shoes. I bought a pair of Wallabees on eBay some years ago advertised as men's 5. I figured they would fit me well. But when I got them, thy were women's 5 and the soles were also very narrow. I was ready to return them as I figured they would be too uncomfortable. But I tried them on, quite snug but wearable. So I soaked them in the bathtub and wore them until dry. The suede uppers stretched to fit perfectly, but the toes did hang over the crepe sole some, and the soles were so narrow I have to be careful not to twist my ankle. They did become my favorite Wallabees, however I've gotten several comments over the years about my feet being small when wearing them, more than even the small sneakers.
Another funny story, I have two pair of woman's wedge Nike Sky High sneakers, size 6 woman's. Being "short" (5'7") I kind of like the extra height... I don't wear them a lot but I'd never gotten a comment about wearing what were obviously women's sneakers. So one evening I'm waiting for my order at the Chinese take-out when one of the kitchen help comes out to mop the floor. He looks at my feet as he is about to mop there, kind of hides what is obviously a laugh, and quickly disappears back into the kitchen without finishing mopping. I figured he was laughing at me wearing women's sneakers and decided to call him out on that, a little fun on my part. So when I see him come back towards the waiting area, I said "so you like my sneakers". His reply "But your feet are so small" The "sky high" sneakers are particularly short because the wedge holds your foot at an angle, making them look even smaller. But he never noticed they were women's sneakers, just that they were so small. That's what he started to laugh at.
Hey Panjumbiejohn, guess I haven't checked over here in a while. Sounds like even though your feet are small you actually like wearing even smaller sizes? You'll have to talk to @SmallSneakersRFun, he would probably like talking to you, he loves wearing small shoes. My feet are 8.5 and 9.5 and I feel like my feet are small...though when I hear about size 7s it makes me feel like I am not really that small. I try to make my feet look bigger by wearing size 10.5-11 or even 11.5 if they are not too huge on me and I don't trip, lol! I will admit that I can probably fit an 8.5 comfortably (though you won't see me in public like that!), below 8.5 would be uncomfortable (and demoralizing - I know, I know...I am talking to a 7...). Anyway, welcome to the chat...always nice to have more small footed visitors :-)
Hey there Panjumbiejohn, you have my dream foot size...like literally, when I was a teen I dreamed about my feet becoming a size 7 instead of a size 9. I almost always wear a size 7-7.5, maybe an 8. I sometimes try to go smaller but it is hard to make them comfortable. I also like stretching smaller shoes so they will fit me. I have several pairs of Jordans in GS size 7 that I have made fix me perfectly, sometimes I can go even smaller, but it is hit or miss. I also have some size 8-8.5s that I have stretched so they fit me huge. I also have a pair of adidas slides in a size 7 that fit me perfect, to others they have even guessed my size at 7-7.5. My feet tend to be narrow, and my toes are short, so they generally look smaller than a 9 anyway.
Yeah, I was finally able to view it, not sure what was going on. Again, hard to tell at that angle. Your feet don't look like a size 5-6 at that angle, but really seeing them from the side would be more telling. Your feet also look somewhat wide, at least not really skinny.
I have this polite way of sitting, if not of a polite pupil. The reason being that my feet are always pulled up under me. It's not smth i think about of doing, it's just become the standard comfort zone.
This summer someone took a group picture in a cafeteria, and on the pic i saw that i'd had one sneaker resting on the side, and the other on top,... I don't know what that is, it looked like the complete polar opposite of flaunting, man spreading or foot confidence.
Then again, be it for being a 5 or 6 at 5'9", be it for other reasons, I must break some "threshold" or so, for a month WITHOUT any comment or reaction is rare, and in a shoe store it was non-existent. If only raised eyebrows or a whistle, i always triggered a reaction. So possibly i'm at the extreme of comments or wish to hide?
Maybe I am used to it, but I don't think shoes start to really look small until you go to skinnier sizes like Jordan GS sizes. Jordan 6s in "Y" sizes really start to look small and narrow. I am not sure what it is, but Jordan 7Ys often tend to fit me very well, where other size 7s would be too tight. I have some Jordans 6s in 7Y and they fit quite well (partly because my feet are skinny and the kids width actually fits me better), but they look a lot smaller than a Jordan (mens) 7.5. It is striking how much different they look. A 7.5 will look like a small mens (with some width to them) where a 7Y really starts to look like a kid's size.
Part of the reason Jordan 7Ys tend to fit me may be because the ones I have bought have all been from thrift stores. At that size it is almost a given that the kid who wore them before me had outgrown them, sometimes by a whole lot, and have stretched them out a bit. Once you get to sz 7s (or below) the thrift stores usually have lots of shoes left in cool styles for really cheap compared to mens sizes.
Dance classes are the most annoying, because there either teacher, partner or others are constantly looking at your feet. Any tip as to shoe wear is welcome!
I am not sure what advice to give on that. White shoes tend to make your feet look larger than black shoes, but lighter colors also draw more attention to your feet.
Thx. So right now I go in grey Reeboks, but a very nice, non-boring grey. They are a Womens 8, but you wouldn't think they are Womens. Always that excercise in finding an ideal balance ππ±.
I really got the impression that in order to make any blog about shoe sizes work, I'd even have to hide/not mention my size in my OWN blog. Which is the one thing i am not willing to do.
π Unfortunately, I once bought like these really solid, strong work boots... but that changed nothing, it looked as solid work boots in a small size π. It's a difficult excercise.
Yeah, you are probably right. Those Balenciagas probably look "normal" size or even small from a distance given how massively wide they are. That would be an interesting test. From a distance you think someone's shoes could be smaller than yours but get up close and find they are massively bigger!
You could wear a size 12, no problem! Your size 6 shoes would fit right inside a size 12 (though maybe the 12s would still be too big) and you could (try to) fool the world, lol!
A 12 slide simply covers my sneaker, so probably yes, that could be possible π. Apart from the weirdness or weird look or risky situations etc of it. I know, i'm difficult, in the end you try to go for an ideal balance in every domain (not too this, not too that, but not this, etc etc). I do think i've gotten good at that, for there are a LOT less reactions than there used to be.
When I was a young teen I definitely would have wanted to have a size 12. Now I am not so sure. I am happy to have smaller feet. I would say either go big or small, otherwise you are caught in the limbo in between (which is part of why I went smaller - it takes me out of the competition). Now sz 12 will try to compete with a sz 7 or 8, but they might try to compete with a 9 or 10.
True! Guys like a battle, with peers, the fun of competition. For a 12 there's no fun or interest in 8,7,6... he has already won at first sight, no surprise or challenge there.
This still takes me back to when I was 11 and the kid in the class who had size 9.5 (when I was a 6-6.5). All the kids were worshiping his shoes and wanted to try them on to see how big they fit. Kids would take turns wearing them for a day. Everyone wanted to pretend their feet were as big as his! There were a few others who were close but I don't think even the tallest kids exceeded him in foot length at the time. His 9.5s were actually pretty snug on him and I remember by the next fall, when he was 12, he was wearing like an 11.5 or so.
Especially with that age i'm into hiding my size. For it's the world on its head and, as you said elsewhere: no filter, they still show what they think. Teenagers too.
Don't keep your feet in jail, let them go free! :-)
ReplyDeleteHeh, did I start a new topic ;-)
ReplyDeleteok, I will post here too...

ReplyDeleteThis is me, below.
ReplyDeleteIn your eyes, does i look small?
Would you hide your feet, if you were me?

That link is not working for me.
ReplyDeleteStrange... for me it does.
DeleteI will try it again.
I uploaded both pics again. Does this work?

ReplyDeleteI already told about this 9/10 friend.
Normally there's nothing about that size, barely looks different from mine.
But then i sat with this friend on the edge of a pool, feet in the water, and that difference was so incredible that he started to laugh, and finds it amusing up to this day, it was a 100% like Mens versus Girls.
The clichΓ©: "It ALL depends..."
